Bashar Humeid

Researcher on renewable energy, environment and democratization. Entrepreneur and inventor of the Freedom Machine

Freedom starts from your rooftop: Bashar Humeid at TEDxAmman (2013) [Arabic Language]

Since 2003 I researched and wrote about energy and media issues for the Swiss educational channel Rebell.tv, the German international broadcasting organization Deutsche Welle and the German portal Qantara.de . Later I worked as an energy and environment researcher at the Emirates Center for Strategic Studies and Research (ECSSR) in Abu Dhabi (UAE).

Interview with Jeremy Rifkin (6/2010)

I conducted published interviews with politicians and thinkers including Mahathir Mohamad, former prime minister of Malaysia, Jeremy Rifkin, economic and social theorist on renewable energy, and Helene Pelosse, the former director of International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA).

Interview with Helene Pelosse (8/2010)

In 2011 I founded in Jordan an award winning non-profit organisation called Meezan. This organization develops sustainable integrated solutions for water, food and energy throughout Jordan and the Arab World with research and development activities conducted also in Germany and Switzerland. The organization developed and installed 15 units of a unit called “The Freedom Machine” in Jordan, Palestine and Switzerland. The Freedom Machine is an integrated, self-sustaining system, installed in the urban landscape. It combines water harvesting, organic food production, solar energy production and eco-building technologies.

Meezan was also involved since 2013 in the development of a unique solar powered system for growing, marketing and distribution of organic produce in Jordan. This system was commercialized into a private company called Yanboot, which is today the leading brand for organic produce in the Jordanian market.

The experience I gained through this period of practical implementation of projects related to renewable energy gave me profound insights into this sector, its relation to society and markets, but also its limitations and problems.
